Collapsed Church Building,

At least one person have been confirmed dead in a collapsed storey building belonging to Christ Chosen Church of God located at Usama street, Uzebu quarters in Benin, capital of Edo state.
The dead person was pulled out of the rubble after about ‎three hours after a rescue operation by sympathisers. Three of the nine workers allegedly hired by the church at N3000 per day‎ to demolish the building which served as offices and living quarters to officials of the church, were said to have just stepped out of the building to eat when it suddenly collapsed on those still working.
As at the time of filling this report, two persons were still trapped in the debris while the three who were rescued alive were brought out with broken limbs. One of the survivors who refused to gave his name, confirmed that authorities of the church ‎hired them to demolish the building manually.
“They asked us to destroy the building. We didn’t have money to eat and a boy asked us to join him for lunch. Four workers were still inside the church when it came down. We had demolished the upper part and they were removing the blocks when the building came down. We did not see the pastor and others again but they were here when the building collapsed,” he said.
Angry residents set a bus belonging to the church ablaze and destroyed the main church auditorium. They blamed the church for resorting to manual labour to demolish the building when they could have hired an excavator.
P.M. NEWS reports that a two storey building belonging to a pentecostal church pastor also collapsed last Wednesday at Ekpoma, the administrative headquarters of Esan West local government area of the state. No life was however lost in the collapsed building.

President Goodluck Jonathan visits collapsed church building

President Goodluck Jonathan on Saturday visited the collapsed guesthouse at a mega-church in Lagos, promising to investigate the cause of the tragedy as the death toll hit 86, rescuers said on Saturday.
“The president came to the church this morning to see things for himself. He met with Prophet TB Joshua and expressed his condolences to the bereaved families,” Ibrahim Farinloye of the National Emergency Management Agency told AFP.

He said Jonathan promised to investigate the cause of the September 12 collapse of the guesthouse at Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN) which left scores trapped in the debris.
Farinloye said the death toll now stood at 86 as against the previous figure of 84 after the various emergency teams involved in the operation had reconciled their figures.

“You are aware that several rescue teams at the state and federal levels were involved in the operations. We sat together and reconciled our figures which has now brought the death toll to 86. But those rescued still stands at 131,” he said.
Farinloye could not say if the new death toll included 84 South Africans who had been confirmed dead in the incident by the country’s high commissioner to Nigeria Lulu Mnguni.
It is believed that there were 349 South Africans visiting the popular church in the Ikotun district of the city at the time of the collapse.

The church’s leader Joshua, who has blamed the incident on sabotage, is one of most well-known Pentecostal preachers and is referred to by followers across the world as “The Prophet” or “The Man of God”.
He claims to work miracles, including raising people from the dead and healing the sick, and foreseeing disasters.
The Lagos state government has accused the church of adding extra floors to the existing structure without approval.
It has ordered urgent structural integrity tests on all buildings in the sprawling compound, including the main church, which Joshua says was designed by the Holy Spirit.

Minister of Education wants Security in schools

Abuja – The Minister of Education, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, has directed heads of various institutions across the country to ensure maximum security in schools to check possible attacks by hoodlums.
Speaking in Kano during a sympathy visit to the Federal College of Education (FCE), which insurgents attacked on Wednesday and killed at least 15 people and wounded several others, the minister expressed hope that security agencies in the state and other parts of the country would continue to give useful advice to schools to ensure maximum security in the institutions.
He said the issue of security was not the affair of only Federal, State or local governments or communities but the responsibility of everybody.

“We hope heads of various schools across the country will come up with some stringent measures for maximum security in their respective schools and it is unfortunate that the trend we are witnessing is that institutions of learning are being targeted,” he said.
He stressed the need for the college to take stringent measures towards enhancing security in the school.
“I believe this incident will not deter our people from pursuing their studies because we see it as a challenge to whoever is concern to provide maximum security to our schools,” Shekarau added.
He also condoled with the staff, students and management of the college over the attack, prayed God to give the families the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss. He wished the injured speedy recovery and commended the Federal Government for sending the delegation to college.
Schools have over the years been a target for the Boko Haram insurgency. Hundreds of learners have been killed while recently, more than 200 schoolgirls were abducted in Borno State
